Explosion Isolation

Explosion Isolation

Explosion isolation systems are designed to detect an explosion as soon as it occurs to instantly isolate or contain it and keep it from spreading to other interconnected equipment. Isolation is provided to vessels that are already "protected", such as vented dust collectors, etc. There are three basic types of explosion isolation systems:

  • Chemical isolation – discharges an explosion suppressant into the duct work that will suppress a fireball, preventing it from reaching inter-connected equipment or plant areas
  • Active mechanical isolation – triggers the release of a high speed knife valve that forms a mechanical barrier in the pipeline. A control panel and pressure detector are required as part of the package.
  • Passive mechanical isolation – In duct "ProFlapPlus" valve closes as a reaction to a pressure wave. It is used for inlet isolation of protected vessels. No additional controls or sensor are required.

All three types of explosion isolation systems are highly effective in preventing explosions from igniting further explosions in other equipment or work areas. The systems are frequently combined for detonation containment. Explosion isolation is also used with explosion venting systems to prevent the spreading of flames.
